The system has been shown to reach high levels of performance in objective blind-test evaluation on the ATIS domain. The system has also been shown to be rapidly portable to a new domain, SPLINT. This did not require any changes in the underlying system code, and was done with a relatively small effort.</Paragraph> <Paragraph position="1"> This work shows that computational linguistic methods, based on general knowledge of language, can be used in large, robust spoken language systems, and that special-purpose NL understanding systems do not have to be built for each new task.</Paragraph> </Section> class="xml-element"></Paper>
