    <Paragraph position="0"> The results of the statistical analysis of the MUC-4 scores on TST3 and TST4 have been presented with an explanation of the computationally-intensive method of determining the statistical significance of the differences between systems. The method of approximate randomization was used to generate the probability distribution of the differences between systems. The statistical significance of the actual results can be ascertained by calculating the significance level during the generation of the distribution and looking up the confidence level in a published table.</Paragraph>
    <Paragraph position="1"> Knowing the statistical significance of the MUC-4 results allows us to draw valid conclusions concerning the performance of the participating systems.</Paragraph>
