<Paragraph position="0"> The competence required for the frequent and conventional use of idiom, metaphor, metonymy, irony, and sarcasm can not be accounted for by either a narrow theory of lexicM semantics or any theory relying on world knowledge alone. Moreover, empiricM evidence suggests that these phenomena constitute an integral part of our linguistic competence. It is therefore clear that our semantic theories must be broadened beyond their current scope to adequately deal with the challenges posed by these phenomena. The work outlined in this paper is a start in this direction.</Paragraph>
