    <Paragraph position="0"> The automatic correction of French text is a major project.</Paragraph>
    <Paragraph position="1"> Knowledge at many different levels must be integrated and coordinated in the system. Only the construction of a prototype can attest to the success of such an integration. We have developed a prototype of the correction program in LISP on a Macintosh Plus. The behavior of the final system will be refined by weighting the rules according to their utility. Statistics gathered from many different users will help us tune the general behavior of the system whilst statistics gathered for a given user will allow us to tune the behavior of the system to the problems specific to that user.</Paragraph>
