    <Paragraph position="0"> The method described in this paper for the treatment of idioms can deal with the problems traditionally related to expressions of this type. Structural transfer is not necessary, since idioms are mapped onto basic meanings. The grammar can operate on idiom structures in the same way as it operates on non-idiomatic structures , whil@, in the case of certain idioms, restrictions on operations are specified. A test implementation in the Rosetta machine translation system has shown that this approach is promising.</Paragraph>
