    <Paragraph position="0"> We have argued that the processing of natural languaae database queries should be driven by the meaning of the input, as determined primarily by the emaninss of the constituent words. The zuechanisms provided for word sense selection and for the inference of missing meaning elements utilize a variety of knowledge sources. It is believed Chat this approach will prove more general and extensible than those based chiefly on the surface structure of the natural language query.</Paragraph>
