    <Paragraph position="0"> This paper presents our current ideas and evolving plan for the MEI project, to take place at the Johns Hopkins University Summer Workshop 2000. Translingual speech retrieval is a long-term research direction, and our team looks forward to jointly taking an initial step to tackle the problem. The authors welcome all comments and suggestions, as we strive to better define the problem in preparation for the six-week Workshop.</Paragraph>
